If localized boiling occurs within the EGR cooler, an internal coolant leak can result. Air pockets in the system caused by improper coolant fill practices can lead to premature failure of the EGR cooler.

Be observant when filling an engine with coolant. Depending on the coolant system, there could be special fill instructions. Watch for information decals or tags for special instructions when filling an engine with coolant. These instructions can be located anywhere on the cooling system (surge tank, radiator tank, radiator mount, firewall, etc.). If no special instructions are present, search for a manual bleed valve on the upper radiator pipe and open this valve during the coolant fill process. This manual bleed valve allows trapped air to escape during the fill process. Not all applications have this valve.

PACCAR’s commitment to producing industry-leading aerodynamic and fuel-efficient vehicles has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay® program. Kenworth’s T660 and T2000 and Peterbilt’s 386 and 387 models are highlighted as environmental leaders due to their application of aerodynamic packaging in their product designs, including sophisticated roof and fuel tank side fairings, bumpers and mirrors, as well as improved engine efficiency. SmartWay® compliant vehicles offer customers a 10-20 percent fuel savings, while also lowering greenhouse gas emissions by significantly reducing NOx and particulate matter.

"PACCAR is pleased to be recognized for its environmental leadership and to partner with the EPA in the development of new technologies for future engine enhancements," said Tom Plimpton, PACCAR president. "Kenworth and Peterbilt are the first commercial vehicle manufacturers to have their complete product line compliant with EPA 2007 emissions regulations. PACCAR is increasing capital expenditures to enhance its leadership in technology, quality and environmental stewardship."

Hybrid Technology
In addition to EPA’s SmartWay® recognition, PACCAR has accelerated its environmental leadership, as evidenced by the development of hybrid vehicle technologies. The innovative Kenworth Clean Power™ and Peterbilt Comfort Class™ cab cooling and heating systems dramatically improve fuel efficiency by eliminating engine use during driver rest periods. “Customers may receive as much as an eight percent improvement in fuel economy when using these new PACCAR systems,” said Dan Sobic, PACCAR senior vice president.

DAF, Kenworth and Peterbilt will begin production of medium-duty hybrid trucks in 2008. These new vehicles will offer significant fuel economy improvements, particularly in urban and utility applications. “The hybrid vehicles program targets a 30 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, which will reduce vehicle operating costs and promote greater environmental stewardship,” said Jim Cardillo, PACCAR executive vice president.

Industry Awards and Recognition
PACCAR has been recognized as one of the best-performing companies by Barron’s magazine (www.barrons.com). Barron’s evaluated and ranked the 500 largest U.S. and Canadian companies by sales growth, cash flow and shareholder return. “PACCAR is pleased to be recognized by Barron’s as one of the top five companies in the survey,” said Mark C. Pigott, chairman and chief executive officer. “PACCAR shareholders benefit from the company’s balanced global diversification and the high-quality products and services delivered by the company’s 19,000 dedicated employees worldwide.”

Forbes magazine (www.forbes.com) recently published its annual CEO pay-versus-performance review. In the pay-versus-performance rankings, Forbes evaluated 189 CEOs who met the qualification criteria of a minimum of six-year tenure as chief executive. The rankings were calculated by comparing company stock performance (including dividends) relative to peer companies and the S&P 500 Index. The final criterion was the executive’s compensation trends during the previous years.

The scores were combined and the executive and company performance were ranked. PACCAR was identified as having one of the top 10 best-performing CEOs in the review. PACCAR’s chief executive officer is the only CEO in the survey to be recognized as a top 10 leader five years in a row.

It was 70 years ago when T.A. Peterman, after producing trucks to meet the needs of his lumber business in Tacoma, Wash., began to sell his trucks to the public. That venture grew into Peterbilt Motors, which this week celebrated its 70th anniversary.

On Wednesday, July 29, and Thursday, July 30, General Manager Bill Jackson and his colleagues celebrated the event with dealers, top customers and community leaders at the company's headquarters in Denton, Texas. In its 70 years, Peterbilt has produced almost 700,000 trucks, Jackson told employees of the Denton manufacturing plant as they enjoyed cake during the anniversary celebration.

“Class pays,” he said, emphasizing the theme the company has used for decades. “Since our first truck was produced in 1939, Peterbilt has become one of the most widely recognized and respected brands in the world – a universal symbol of pride, quality and class. This significant milestone could not be accomplished without the support of Peterbilt’s dedicated employees, a superior dealer network and committed suppliers, as well as our valued customers and the community we serve.”

Nearly 100 model configurations have marked Peterbilt’s history, said Larry Reding, assistant general manager of sales and marketing. “From the first logging trucks of the ’30s and revolutionary cabover vehicles in the ’40s, to the birth of an industry icon – the Model 359 in the ’60s – Peterbilts have set the pace,” Reding said. “In the ’70s and ’80s, the workhorses that built America were Peterbilt Models 348, 362 and legendary Model 379.”

Starting with the Model 387 in the ’90s, Peterbilt has launched a series of aerodynamic fuel-efficient trucks. Improvements in aerodynamics, productivity and payload maximization have been a staple throughout company history, said Landon Sproull, chief engineer. “Peterbilt’s product history is a roadmap of revolutionary engineering solutions that continue to surpass customers’ requirements and set the bar for the industry,” Sproull said.

This year also marks a milestone – the 60th anniversary – for the company’s dealer network. Coast Counties Truck and Equipment in San Jose, Calif., began selling Peterbilts in 1949; the network has since grown to 247 locations in North America.

New Engine Technology

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Technology Information

Environmental Protection Agency regulations in 2010 will require a reduction in Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emitted from diesel engines to "near zero" levels, as noted by the green box in the chart at right. PACCAR will utilize Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), an exhaust after treatment technology, to achieve the required NOx levels, providing customers a solution that protects the environment, and increases engine fuel economy and reliability. The alternative approach to meeting 2010 emissions requirements is to increase the levels of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) in the engine combustion process.
PACCAR has carefully evaluated each technology and concluded that SCR provides a number of distinct advantages over in-cylinder EGR designs including:

Fuel Economy - SCR offers up to 5% improvement of '07 engine designs. EGR-only engines are estimated to result in a 5-9% loss versus today's engines.

Reliability - Higher EGR flows result in 20-30% higher heat rejection and excessive acidic condensation that corrodes internal engine systems.

Power Loss - EGR engine users can expect a deterioration of 50-100 horsepower for the same displacement and reduced throttle response.

Allison Transmission announced Friday, Dec. 12, that its ongoing product improvement initiative continues with the rollout of new Load-Based Shift Scheduling (LBSS) for MY09 Allison 1000/2000/3000/4000 Series models, available now.

LBSS automatically selects between Economy and Performance shift schedules based on the vehicle's actual payload and the grade on which it is operating, according to the company; this optimizes fuel economy while maintaining high productivity capability, even during heavily loaded situations.

Using advanced algorithms to calculate real-time vehicle load and operating grade, LBSS selects the appropriate shift schedule for the task at hand, Allison says; it is calibrated to primarily use the Economy mode, but automatically selects the Performance mode when conditions require it.

LBSS is part of the standard Shift Energy Management (SEM) calibration for approved engines, according to the Indianapolis-based company.

Peterbilt Motors Co. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, celebrated a significant milestone at the company’s manufacturing facility in Denton, Texas, with the completion of its 300,000th production truck. Delivery of the Model 387 aerodynamic truck to Witte Brothers Exchange Inc. was done at the Denton plant amongst Peterbilt employees, local government officials and the media.

“Peterbilt is proud to celebrate this important milestone with Witte Brothers Exchange, as both of our companies share an unwavering commitment to the transportation industry, our employees, and a superior product,” says Bill Jackson, Peterbilt general manager and Paccar vice president. “The 300,000th truck produced, a Peterbilt Model 387, signifies the attributes of Peterbilt past, present and future through its fuel-efficient design, while not comprising the class and style that have become synonymous with the Peterbilt brand.”

In August 1980, Peterbilt Denton’s first truck rolled off the assembly line – a white Model 359. Today, all seven of the company’s heavy-duty truck models are manufactured at the facility.

“Witte Brothers is proud to partner with Peterbilt Motors Company,” says Brent Witte, president of Witte Brothers Exchange, whose on time delivery program has enabled the company to exceed a 99 percent reliability rate. “Our company’s rich history dates back to before 1950, when the company canvassed the Midwest United States hauling livestock and grain. It is a honor to take delivery of Peterbilt Denton’s 300,000th produced truck – it represents our dedication to excellence, which is evident to our customers in every delivery our company makes.”

PETERBILT ANNOUNCES FULL PRODUCTION OF MEDIUM DUTY HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (March 26, 2008) – Peterbilt Motors Company announced plans for full production of its Model 330 and Model 335 medium duty hybrid vehicles during its press conference at the 2008 Mid-America Trucking Show. The vehicles will be in full production at its manufacturing facility in Ste. Therese, Quebec, Canada in summer 2008.

Both the Peterbilt Model 330 and Model 335 Hybrid Electric vehicles feature the Eaton Hybrid Power system and provide customers with impressive fuel savings benefits. The Model 330 utilizes components that provide up to a 30 percent improvement in fuel economy in an urban driving cycle. The Model 335 Hybrid Electric utilizes these same components to provide up to a 60 percent improvement in overall fuel efficiency, when configured for utility applications. The Model 330 Hybrid Electric can be configured for non-CDL operation with hydraulic brakes for a greater range of driver options.

Additionally, the Model 330 and Model 335 hybrids are eligible to receive tax credits from the United States Federal Government as certified by the Department of Treasury’s Heavy Manufacturing and Transportation Group. The maximum $12,000 credit for Class 7 hybrids is available for the Model 335 Hybrid Electric in both utility-boom and pickup and delivery applications. A $6,000 credit, the maximum for Class 6 hybrids, is available for the Model 330 Class 6 Hybrid Electric.

“With higher fuel costs and growing concerns with the global carbon footprint, Peterbilt is at the forefront in the development of green technologies that help the environment by providing greater fuel savings and reducing emissions,” says Bill Jackson, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “Our medium duty hybrid vehicles have been proven in testing across North America to demonstrate impressive fuel efficiency improvements.”

Medium Duty Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Both trucks use a parallel hybrid system with an electric motor that assists the diesel engine with supplemental torque for improved fuel economy. The system stores energy during stopping through a process called regenerative braking, and then reuses it to launch and accelerate the vehicle.

The Class 6 Model 330 is powered by the PACCAR PX-6 engine rated at 260 horsepower and 620 ft-lbs of torque. With the hybrid system engaged, horsepower increases to 300 and torque is limited to 860 ft-lbs. This configuration is ideal for stop-and-go use, such as urban pickup and delivery, resulting in up to a 30 percent fuel savings.

Peterbilt’s Class 7 Model 335 uses the hybrid electric system for both on-road driving and stationary PTO applications. Also powered by the PACCAR PX-6 engine, it uses the system’s lithium-ion batteries to electrically operate the PTO. During bucket operation, the engine needs to run only about 1/6th of the time, versus non-hybrid vehicles. The engine then automatically starts to recharge the batteries, which takes approximately 4.5 minutes, and then shuts off. Fuel use, emissions and noise are greatly reduced when used in municipal and utility applications.

Maintenance requirements are also reduced from the regeneration reducing brake wear, as well as less wear and tear on the engine.

Peterbilt Motors Company, a division of PACCAR Inc (Nasdaq: PCAR), manufactures premium quality trucks for a wide range of markets, including over-the-road, construction, municipal and medium duty. Based in Denton, Texas, Peterbilt combines classic styling, innovative design and superior-quality features in a custom-engineered truck that stands as the "Class" of the industry. Through its 240-plus North American dealer locations, Peterbilt also provides a comprehensive array of TruckCare® aftermarket support programs, including preventive maintenance plans, expedited QuickCare services, automated parts inventory replenishment and 24/7 complimentary Customer Assistance through 1-800-4-PETERBILT. For more information about Peterbilt, visit http://www.peterbilt.com.
