Peterbilt Motors Company announces receiving accreditation for developing the industry’s first SmartWay designated alternative fuel vehicle. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay Program has recognized Peterbilt’s Model 386 liquefied natural gas (LNG) truck as meeting the established fuel-saving, low-emission equipment requirements set for Class 8 trucks. The Model 386 LNG will join Peterbilt’s family of SmartWay designated vehicles which includes the Model 587, Model 386 and Model 384.

“Peterbilt is proud that the Model 386 LNG has been recognized as the industry’s first alternative fueled vehicle to obtain SmartWay designation,” said Bill Jackson, Peterbilt general manager and PACCAR vice president. “The Model 386 LNG SmartWay designated vehicle offers optimal fuel and emissions efficiency with horsepower and torque equal to a diesel-fueled engine, making it the ultimate environmentally sound performance solution for customers, and further demonstrates Peterbilt as an industry leader in developing innovative quality products.”

Equipped with a fuel efficient, aerodynamic package, the Model 386 LNG SmartWay designated vehicle is ideally suited for a variety of applications, including line, bulk and tanker hauling.

The contoured aerodynamic package features roof fairings with trim tabs that help propel air up and over the cab and trailer, re-contoured chassis fairings with a “flair” design pushing airflow around the tires and wheels, and an exclusive Peterbilt transition fairing positioned between the cab and detachable sleeper directing airflow over and around the sleeper. In addition, a composite molded sunvisor featuring a Gurney strip design transitions air more efficiently over the cab while providing glare protection for drivers, and three inch rubber mounts are fastened to the end of the sleeper driving airflow out and around the trailers.

“Peterbilt is always looking to achieve the next level of innovation and operating efficiency,” said Landon Sproull, Peterbilt chief engineer. “Through extensive aerodynamic analysis and testing, Peterbilt engineers combined the industry-leading Model 386 aerodynamic package with the Westport GX engine to provide the most fuel efficient, performance configuration.”

The alternative fueled vehicle is powered by the EPA-certified Westport GX engine, offering up to 475 horsepower and 1,750 ft./lbs. of torque. The 15L engine uses high pressure direct injection technology (HPDI), specialized cryogenic fuel tanks, and associated electronic components to facilitate robust performance and reliable operation. This technology uses a low cost, cleaner-burning fuel than diesel without compromising engine torque, power, fuel economy, or drivability, in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent.

Peterbilt offers a full range of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) power platforms. Also powered by Westport GX engine, the high-performance Peterbilt Model 367 is the ideal vocational truck for a variety of dump, mixer and construction applications. The Model 367 features a 123” BBC, and is available in two axle configurations, as a day cab or with a Unibilt sleeper. It’s also available with REPTO and in a heavy haul configuration with a large, 1,669 square-inch cooling system for tractor, oilfield and stationary applications. In addition, Models 384, 365 and 320, equipped with the Cummins Westport ISL-G engine, can be spec’d with CNG or LNG offering 320 horsepower and 1,000 ft./lbs. of torque, making it an excellent choice for short-haul, regional, refuse and dump trucks with GCW/GVW ratings up to 66,000 lbs.

Peterbilt’s family of alternative fuel trucks forms the industry’s most comprehensive, high performing, fuel efficient, and environmentally responsible lineup. With more than 250 dealer locations in Canada and the United States, Peterbilt provides best in class service and support for natural gas trucks.

A/C Maintenance is a Year-Round Effort.

Like any system on the truck, preventive maintenance is important. The best way to avoid big repair bills is to make A/C maintenance a year-round effort.

Whenever you have a truck in for scheduled maintenance, check the moisture indicator on the receiver-dryer’s sight glass. In general a dryer should be replaced once a year or every time the A/C system is opened.

Keep filters clean and installed.

Clean out the condenser so it is free of debris and contamination. But a high-pressure hose can damage fins and disrupt the airflow across the condenser, so be careful when you clean the grille area.

Repair any damaged fins.

Inspect the system for proper compressor belt tension and clutch voltage.

One reason trucks repeatedly experience short A/C clutch or compressor life is low voltage at the clutch coil lead wire. Poor ground wire connections are an obvious source - but some truckers are tapping into the electrical system to power hotel loads, which can steal the voltage an A/C clutch needs to do its job. So when testing voltage, re-create the full demand.

All electrical connections should be kept clean. Install dielectric grease in any connectors that are frequently exposed to rain and road wash.

Always replace O-rings and seals when a connection is broken.

In the case of a compressor failure, the system should be flushed and the system components back-flushed to remove any potential compressor debris from clogging system heat exchangers or expansion devices.

Always follow manufacturers’ recommended evacuation and charging procedures.

Last but not lease, run you’re A/C system. Frequent and regular use keeps the seals lubricated and the oil in circulation helping maintain long and reliable life.

Allison Transmission announced Friday, Dec. 12, that its ongoing product improvement initiative continues with the rollout of new Load-Based Shift Scheduling (LBSS) for MY09 Allison 1000/2000/3000/4000 Series models, available now.

LBSS automatically selects between Economy and Performance shift schedules based on the vehicle's actual payload and the grade on which it is operating, according to the company; this optimizes fuel economy while maintaining high productivity capability, even during heavily loaded situations.

Using advanced algorithms to calculate real-time vehicle load and operating grade, LBSS selects the appropriate shift schedule for the task at hand, Allison says; it is calibrated to primarily use the Economy mode, but automatically selects the Performance mode when conditions require it.

LBSS is part of the standard Shift Energy Management (SEM) calibration for approved engines, according to the Indianapolis-based company.

Peterbilt Motors Co. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, celebrated a significant milestone at the company’s manufacturing facility in Denton, Texas, with the completion of its 300,000th production truck. Delivery of the Model 387 aerodynamic truck to Witte Brothers Exchange Inc. was done at the Denton plant amongst Peterbilt employees, local government officials and the media.

“Peterbilt is proud to celebrate this important milestone with Witte Brothers Exchange, as both of our companies share an unwavering commitment to the transportation industry, our employees, and a superior product,” says Bill Jackson, Peterbilt general manager and Paccar vice president. “The 300,000th truck produced, a Peterbilt Model 387, signifies the attributes of Peterbilt past, present and future through its fuel-efficient design, while not comprising the class and style that have become synonymous with the Peterbilt brand.”

In August 1980, Peterbilt Denton’s first truck rolled off the assembly line – a white Model 359. Today, all seven of the company’s heavy-duty truck models are manufactured at the facility.

“Witte Brothers is proud to partner with Peterbilt Motors Company,” says Brent Witte, president of Witte Brothers Exchange, whose on time delivery program has enabled the company to exceed a 99 percent reliability rate. “Our company’s rich history dates back to before 1950, when the company canvassed the Midwest United States hauling livestock and grain. It is a honor to take delivery of Peterbilt Denton’s 300,000th produced truck – it represents our dedication to excellence, which is evident to our customers in every delivery our company makes.”

PETERBILT ANNOUNCES FULL PRODUCTION OF MEDIUM DUTY HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (March 26, 2008) – Peterbilt Motors Company announced plans for full production of its Model 330 and Model 335 medium duty hybrid vehicles during its press conference at the 2008 Mid-America Trucking Show. The vehicles will be in full production at its manufacturing facility in Ste. Therese, Quebec, Canada in summer 2008.

Both the Peterbilt Model 330 and Model 335 Hybrid Electric vehicles feature the Eaton Hybrid Power system and provide customers with impressive fuel savings benefits. The Model 330 utilizes components that provide up to a 30 percent improvement in fuel economy in an urban driving cycle. The Model 335 Hybrid Electric utilizes these same components to provide up to a 60 percent improvement in overall fuel efficiency, when configured for utility applications. The Model 330 Hybrid Electric can be configured for non-CDL operation with hydraulic brakes for a greater range of driver options.

Additionally, the Model 330 and Model 335 hybrids are eligible to receive tax credits from the United States Federal Government as certified by the Department of Treasury’s Heavy Manufacturing and Transportation Group. The maximum $12,000 credit for Class 7 hybrids is available for the Model 335 Hybrid Electric in both utility-boom and pickup and delivery applications. A $6,000 credit, the maximum for Class 6 hybrids, is available for the Model 330 Class 6 Hybrid Electric.

“With higher fuel costs and growing concerns with the global carbon footprint, Peterbilt is at the forefront in the development of green technologies that help the environment by providing greater fuel savings and reducing emissions,” says Bill Jackson, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “Our medium duty hybrid vehicles have been proven in testing across North America to demonstrate impressive fuel efficiency improvements.”

Medium Duty Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Both trucks use a parallel hybrid system with an electric motor that assists the diesel engine with supplemental torque for improved fuel economy. The system stores energy during stopping through a process called regenerative braking, and then reuses it to launch and accelerate the vehicle.

The Class 6 Model 330 is powered by the PACCAR PX-6 engine rated at 260 horsepower and 620 ft-lbs of torque. With the hybrid system engaged, horsepower increases to 300 and torque is limited to 860 ft-lbs. This configuration is ideal for stop-and-go use, such as urban pickup and delivery, resulting in up to a 30 percent fuel savings.

Peterbilt’s Class 7 Model 335 uses the hybrid electric system for both on-road driving and stationary PTO applications. Also powered by the PACCAR PX-6 engine, it uses the system’s lithium-ion batteries to electrically operate the PTO. During bucket operation, the engine needs to run only about 1/6th of the time, versus non-hybrid vehicles. The engine then automatically starts to recharge the batteries, which takes approximately 4.5 minutes, and then shuts off. Fuel use, emissions and noise are greatly reduced when used in municipal and utility applications.

Maintenance requirements are also reduced from the regeneration reducing brake wear, as well as less wear and tear on the engine.

Peterbilt Motors Company, a division of PACCAR Inc (Nasdaq: PCAR), manufactures premium quality trucks for a wide range of markets, including over-the-road, construction, municipal and medium duty. Based in Denton, Texas, Peterbilt combines classic styling, innovative design and superior-quality features in a custom-engineered truck that stands as the "Class" of the industry. Through its 240-plus North American dealer locations, Peterbilt also provides a comprehensive array of TruckCare® aftermarket support programs, including preventive maintenance plans, expedited QuickCare services, automated parts inventory replenishment and 24/7 complimentary Customer Assistance through 1-800-4-PETERBILT. For more information about Peterbilt, visit http://www.peterbilt.com.
